Fertility isn't doomed after 35, but it does require a more intentional and wholistic approach
Jun 27, 2025
By your mid-30s, your body has history. It’s lived through seasons of stress, long work hours, shifting sleep, the standard american diet, maybe pregnancies — and possibly a decade or more on hormonal birth control.
And if you're a millennial currently witnessing the state of the world... like hello? Are we okay?
These experiences often leave behind deeper patterns of depletion or dysregulation. That doesn’t make your body broken. It means it’s asking for support.
Traditional medicine deems 35 + and older "Advanced Maternal Age" .. and while I see why it's necessary to monitor these pregnancies, not every woman who is 35+ TTC will struggle or have issues.
But here’s what I often see in women 35+ who are preparing to conceive:
– Low mineral/ nutrient reserves, especially minerals like magnesium, zinc, selenium, magnesium, vitamin D, B vitamins, and iodine (a lot of which are depleted from stress, poor gut health or YEARS of the hormonal birth control pill).
– Sluggish digestion / constipation, which means hormones like estrogen aren’t being properly eliminated (hello histamine + estrogen dominance)
– Sluggish thyroid function or hypothyroidism, which leads to a sluggish metabolism, poor temperature regulation, slower digestion, inconsistent ovulation, painful periods, fertility struggles, + more
– Low-grade inflammation from gut imbalances or food sensitivities that were never identified
– Lower detox capacity, from nutrient deficiencies (amino acids + other key nutrients are needed for this), chronic stress, alcohol, medications, and endocrine disrupting chemicals.
– Hormonal imbalances like estrogen dominance and/or low progesterone, leading to symptoms like PMS, spotting, painful periods, or irregular cycles — dismissed for years as “normal”
The silver lining?
All of these are addressable.
But they do require a more strategic, root-cause approach — one that doesn’t just throw supplements or prescriptions alone at symptoms.
Why Fertility Prep Is Even MORE Important After 35
Let's get into the science.
It takes around 3–4 months (90–120 days) for follicles to mature and for each egg to go through its final maturation phase before ovulation. That means what you do now impacts your cycle months from now.
And this is good news — because it gives you time.
You don’t need to panic. You need a plan that allows your body to feel safe + nourished. And most of our habits in 2025 aren't supporting this.
Fertility prep after 35 isn’t about doing more — it’s about doing the right things to support your body where it's at, and consistently, so your body has what it needs to do what it was designed to do.
This work isn’t just about trying to make a baby. It’s about building a STRONG foundation, inside and out.
Real Talk: Fertility Prep Isn’t Just About Food + Supplements
The women I work with are smart. They’ve read the blogs. They’ve bought the supplements. Many of them are already eating “clean”, working out daily, and doing their best.
So why are they still feeling off?
Because true fertility prep goes deeper than surface-level wellness.
We zoom out and ask:
– Is your body still in fight-or-flight mode most of the day?
– Are you actually digesting + absorbing your meals — or are eating on the go, while rushing between tasks or aren't chewing well?
– Are you actually sleeping through the night — or waking up wired at 2am + can't go back to sleep?
– Have you ever truly replenished the nutrients lost from years of hormonal birth control or chronic stress?
This is the difference between “trying everything” and actually making progress.
Where I Recommend Starting
Instead of guessing or jumping straight into protocols (especially ones that come after testing), here’s where I start with most clients:
✅ Eat real meals with protein, fat + fiber — consistently, not just when it’s convenient. You don't have to cook every day, but if you're eating takeout 5 days a week AND aren't trying to be intention with eating more balanced meals, this could be why you're still having symptoms.
✅ Support daily bowel movements — so you can clear excess estrogen and toxins from your symptom. Ignore all the "detox" supplements you see online. You need to start with your sh*t.
✅ Reduce or pause alcohol + caffeine — especially if sleep or anxiety are issues. Also, we love a good cocktail here + there, but it's a poison, serves no nutritional value, increases histamine + inflammation, AND just one drink can impact estrogen metabolism.
✅ Limit plastics, synthetic fragrances, and conventional products — small swaps in your day to day products (like your shampoo, soap, laundry detergent, etc) really make all the difference.
✅ Make rest a priority, not a reward — especially if you've been feeling more stressed or burnt out, you're exhausted, are in a busy season of life, you run a business OR train hard.
✅ Test your gut via the GI map and mineral levels via the HTMA test— if you’ve dealt with IBS, bloat, fatigue, painful or irregular periods, endometriosis, PCOS, autoimmunity, long-term hormonal birth control use, train hard, AND are feeling like sh*t or struggling to conceive, 20/10 would look into these tests (I utilize these with most of my clients)- They give us data, save time + help us determine exactly WHERE to give our focus.
And most importantly: start before you're READY or TRYING.
Giving your body a 3–6 month head start makes a massive difference in how you feel — and even your body's readiness to conceive.
You’re Not Behind... You’re Just Starting From a Different Place
Fertility after 35 isn’t about racing against your biology.
It’s about finally giving your body the care and attention it’s been needing for years.
When you focus on replenishment, not restriction...
When you understand HOW to fuel your body + nourish it with sustainable day to day habits...
When you build trust with your body again...
When you feel calm, rested, and nourished most days...
Conception goes from NOT being possible to DANG, okay age really is just a number.
Yes, there will be a time + place for things like IVF, especially if you have structural issues from conditions like endo or have had ovaries, tubes removed..
But here's the best part of this work...
It truly benefits you, even before there’s a baby on board. It gives you energy, peace, regular + easy cycles, no more bloat and a renewed connection with your body (while so many people are out here disconnected AF from themselves).
